The long term vision

I read, with interest, an interview with Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon. His is one of the few publicly traded companies (especially technology), that has taken a long term strategy for building infrastructure and innovation, over short sighted earnings focus. In fact, Amazon’s stock was punished for years, during a stock market recovery period, because of his outlook and refusal to succumb to lack of vision.
My admiration here, should come as no surprise to people who know me, since we have insisted on the same strategy. So much so, that we certainly suffered in revenue over the years because of insistence of using profits in areas of development, technology and operations over sales and marketing.
In my opinion, the best quote from Bezos was, “people who want to pioneer and find new ways of doing things know there are going to be ups and downs, that there will be profound moments of success and failure. And that’s O.K. It’s not an experiment if you know it’s going to work.”
I think that is an excellent way to look at things whether its us, or sourcing practitioners.
