Where Do I Start?

October 7th, 2008 at 07:16am Oscar Pacheco - Iasta

Where do I start?  I have been hearing less and less of this phrase when it comes to the eSourcing / eProcurement space, but it is still out there.  All too recently most procurement leads (Directors, VP, Managers, etc) were very reluctant to start an initiative because of fear of making the wrong choice in software, hardware, scope, etc.  I guess just like anything that was once new, people get a better understanding of the concepts and learn more about the options the fear tends to dissipate.

In most cases, procurement leaders are looking at the starting point from a cost / benefit basis, which is a valid exercise.  This should be compared to the SOP the organization is following and should be done for all the projects you are considering.  You need to be careful on the time frame of the analysis, as the benefits of eProcurement are more long term verses eSourcing providing both short and long term payback.  Once you select potential starting points, review them with your sourcing/procurement team in order to get their viewpoint on the most necessary needs.

{Side note…..this will help a ton during the implementation phase.}

Each organization will have different requirements and needs which dictate the starting point, but it is important to move in a forward direction.  In today’s market, standing still is no longer an option.
