Proving Yourself Should Be A Welcome Challenge

At what age do you want to retire?

How old are you now?

OK, so that leaves you how many years until retirement?

Guess what?  That is the exact same number of years you have left to prove yourself in sourcing.

I’ve met many a sourcing professional who is tired of having to prove him/herself over and over again.  But that’s the nature of the beast.

No matter who you are or what you’ve accomplished, every sourcing project has an internal customer who holds it near and dear to his/her heart.  They worry about the sourcing team coming in and messing everything up, negatively impacting their work for the foreseeable future.

If you act like you’re above proving yourself, it is almost a step toward failure.  With the passion to outdo what you’ve done before, you will be better positioned to actually succeed and please your internal customer.

So embrace the doubt that your internal customers may have.  Use it as fuel to push yourself to be the best you can be.

Think of sports coaches.  They can win championships one year and be fired the next.  They still have to prove themselves over and over again.

And so should each and every sourcing professional.

  1. Whether you are in sourcing, sales, product development, or accounting, you have to be prepared to “prove” yourself everyday. You need to bring value to the organization on every project and that’s just the way it is.
