“I believe you make your own luck,” Jane said. “But I also believe I have been lucky by being in the right place, at the right time. My experience at a couple of large technology companies provided me with the financial stability and industry connections to launch my own company.”
On Business Principles
Jane comes from more than 25 years of IT marketing and communications experience with leading-edge technology companies. When building her own business, she established these three rules:
- I work with technologies that I believe in.
- I work with people that I like.
- I don’t work with companies that compete with each other.
On the Status Quo
Jane also encourages people to challenge the status quo.
“When I first joined the London VMware User Group steering committee, I had a few questions about the planning and logistics of the meetings,” Jane said.
“I was thinking of ways to increase our membership and provide more education opportunities. When I asked why we offered half day meetings instead of full day sessions, the team said ‘Because we have always done it that way.’ But just because you’ve always done something a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s the right way. It also doesn’t mean you are doing something the wrong way, but you should certainly review it.”
In addition to her positive attitude and outlook on life, Jane has always operated under this philosophy: “Treat people as you wish to be treated yourself.”
“I’ve never asked my team to do something I wouldn’t consider doing myself,” Jane said. “You have to lead by example and that example should always be a good one, not bad.”
